Objectives on Resumes
Objectives on Resumes I see/hear lots of people debating about objectives versus career summaries on resumes. For those of you who dont know the difference, here is a quick explanation. Starting back in the stone ages, when a person created their resume (typed, written by hand, chiseled with a sharp stone and slate, etc.) they would typically start the resume with an objective statement like this: Objective- to obtain a challenging position where I can utilize my skills with a company that provides opportunity for growth. Or something similar. What exactly is this telling the employer? What can you do for me? How much will you pay me? Its important to remember the main thing when creating your resume it is not what the company can do for you, its what you can do for the company! Frankly, when a hiring person is going through a stack of resumes, they really arent caring what your goals in life are, or how you would like the company to open up opportunities for you. You have to prove to them that you are there to HELP THEM. Remember, its not about you. It is the first thing the reader will see, and I guarantee that you will NOT leave a lasting impression. Your resume will most likely end up in the circular file. An objective statement by itself doesnt do that. A career summary explains what it is that you can do for the company, what your expertise is in, your brand, your strengths. All of these things tell the employer that you can DO THIS FOR THEM. If the career summary is followed by bulleted keywords, keyword action phrases, core competencies, etc., even better. The first half of the page is the area that gets looked at and decided upon instantly. Better to pack a punch. Here is an example of an effective career summary: Dynamic executive leadership career in international, billion dollar organizations with a rich mix of finance, operations, internal/external processes, technical savvy and business development. Intimate knowledge of financial processes, operating results and profitability. Expert in executing team-driven process improvements to increase revenue growth operational efficiency, and overall profitability. Executive MBA. Expertise in: *Financial Procurement Controls *International Sourcing, Operations Finance *Contract Negotiations Procurement Controls *Technology Process Implementation *Strategic Financial Planning *Start Ups, Turnaround Revitalization Much better, more impactful, dont you think? Now, I have seen (and written) some resumes where it says something like, Objective-Executive Finance Position that was followed by a career summary. In that case, it was/is more like an introduction to the person, their brand, and the position they want. Go over your resume thoroughly and remove/rewrite your objective so that it is speaking to the employer telling them what you can do for them. Replace it with a fresh and dynamic career summary. You need to sell yourself on your resume and a one liner objective isnt going to do it.

Cover Letters Do Matter
Cover Letters Do MatterAndrew Lamberson doesnt work for The New York Times Magazine in Brooklyn. And his titelbild letter didnt get him a job. So whats the point here?Well, Andrew always believed that titelblatt letters were essentially uselessand so he wrote boring cover letter after boring cover letter for jobs that he didnt getand wasnt all that interested in anyway. Then he saw a posting on Facebook for NYTM, a publication that he loved and read religiously. He decided to get a little crazynothing ventured, nothing gained, right? He really wanted the job, and he had to find a way to convince the head photo editor, Kathy Ryan, that he was exactly the right person for their photo division.Lamberson chose a photo that really spoke to himan image that photographer Eugene Richards took of Joan Didion. He sent Ryan a letter telling her how the image had affected him, and how Didions personality really came through in the photo. He talked about how the photo had turned on its edge everyt hing hed learned about photography in college and had given him an entirely new perspective. Then he expressed his desire to contributeand his belief that he could.Lamberson worked hard on his cover letterand even had a copy editor look it over. He didnt worry overly much about his resume, counting on the cover letter to do the work for him. Then, something amazing happened Within just an hour of receiving Lambersons letter and resume, Ryan responded she invited him to come in for an interview. If youre expecting a totally happy ending, you wont see that here. Lamberson didnt get the job because, in the final analysis, he didnt have enough magazine experience. His cover letter got him an interview, not a job. But heres the thinghe did get the interview. And when he does have enough experience, you can bet that Ryan will remember him.Ryan told Lamberson that out of all the applicants for the position (and there were a great many), his cover letter was the best, and she asked him to ke ep in touch. So, what have we learned from this? Cover letters matter even if you dont immediately get the job. Properly done, they DO get you noticed. The job might not happen today, but a stellar cover letter can get you noticed and get you on file. Never give up on your dreams. Dream big. Your dreams might not be realized immediately, but down the road, who knows what could happen? Never assume that a job is out of reach. Give it your best shot, and the job that you dont get today could very well be yours tomorrow.

How to Tell if Youre Facing Harassment by Managers in the Workplace
How to Tell if Youre Facing Harassment by Managers in the Workplace I think my babo is harassing me.Its a statement Ive heard a lot over the past five years. I represent employees in workplace discrimination matters, so people often come to me when they are having problems at work or feel that they are facing harassment by managers in the workplace.Whether the conversation is the result of a paid consultation with my firm or a friend pulling me aside at lunch, I always respond to this statement the same way What is going on? What did your employer do? What have they said? Are there others they treat the same way? Are there others who are treated better? For workplace conduct to be considered harassment, it must check certain boxes under the law. Harassment, in the colloquial sense, is very different than unlawful harassment based on a protected class. Many times, when an employee tells me theyve been harassed at work, the conduct they describe does leid fit the conduct prohibited by la w. Of course, there are things your babo should never do. But bullying, angry outburstsand nasty attitudes arent illegal on their own. For an employers actions to be considered illegal, they must be based on a protected class. What Is Workplace Harassment?By definition, unlawful workplace harassment is a form of employment discrimination that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, (ADEA)and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, (ADA).Each of those laws prohibits discrimination at work. Title VII prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, race, color, national originand religion. Sexual harassment, for instance, falls under the scope of Title VII. The ADEA prohibits discrimination based on age, and the ADA outlaws disability-based discrimination.A negative anfhrer is never a pleasant thing to have. Knowing how to discern whether their conduct is unlawful or whether they are just being a jerk is important. Are You Facing Harassment by Managers in the Workplace? If you think youre facing harassment in the workplace, here are three signs for which to look out.1. They make inappropriate sexual remarks or subject you to unwanted sexual advances. One very obvious way to tell if your boss is harassing you in the case of sexual harassment is if they make sexually explicit or sexually suggestive remarks, or if they subject you to unwelcome sexual behavior. As the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) states, it is unlawful to harass a rolle (an applicant or employee) because of that persons sex. Harassment can include sexual harassment or unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favorsand other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature.A boss who subjects you to unwanted sexual conduct is a major red flag. Moreover, their behavior may even break certain criminal laws depending on the severity of it. This is never OK, and you should always report such conduct through your employe rs complaint channels and to agencies like the EEOC or your equivalent state agency.2. They make inappropriate or biased comments about a persons sex.Signs of sexual harassment arent always obvious. And harassment does not have to be of a sexual nature in reservierung to be considered unlawful harassment under Title VII. It can also include offensive remarks about a persons sex in general. For example, as the EEOC states that it is illegal to harass a woman by making offensive comments about women in general.Examples of such unlawful comments include statements such as women change when they get pregnant and have babies, or that a woman cant do a certain job as well as a man.For the unlawful conduct to be considered harassment, it must be so frequent or severe that it creates a hostile or offensive work environment or result in an adverse employment decision (such as the victim being fired or demoted). In any event, the alleged behavior must rise above simple teasing and general bul lying. Courts are not plaintiff-friendly in this regard.3. They make comments that target other protected classes.Similarly, your boss may be harassing you if they make inappropriate remarks or target you based on your race, color, religion, national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information. Offensive conduct may include, but is not limited tooffensive jokes, slurs, epithets or name calling, physical assaults or threats, intimidation, ridicule or mockery, insults or put-downs, offensive objects or pictures, and interference with work performance.A boss who targets you or other employees in this manner based on a protected status like discriminating against someones religion may be engaging in unlawful harassment. But whether a certain comment or conduct will be found to be unlawful harassment is still case-specific. When investigating a claim, the EEOC looks at the entire record including the nature of the conduct and the context in which the alleged incidents oc curred. Determinations of whether harassment is severe or pervasive enough to be illegal are made on a case-by-case basis. Any subsequent court reviews would do the same, as would your state civil rights agency should you choose that route instead.Or Is Your Boss Just Being Difficult? If your boss does not specifically target you or others based on the above-protected classes, or if their conduct does not rise to the severe or pervasive standard set by the courts, they may not be engaging in harassment.Instead, they might just be difficult. You may just be handling an unprofessional manager. Some examples of a boss who is probably not harassing you, but is likely just being difficult include the followingThey give everyone a hard time, regardless of who the person is.They are known for being a stickler. They are short-tempered and known for blowing their top. They dont negatively influence the terms and conditions of your employment. Instead, you just find them irritating or annoying. It s important to note that the above list is not exhaustiveand, of course, these scenarios are all case-specific. If you are dealing with a cruel boss, you might want to startconsidering how to get out of a hostile work environment anyway. What Should You Do if You Think You Really Are Facing Workplace Harassment? You should always consult with an employment discrimination attorney in your state if you believe you are the victim of harassment. They will be able to instruct and guide you through the complaint filing process and can help you navigate these issues at work and beyond. Here are some more Fairygodboss posts that can serve as resources to you to help you better understand workplace harassment. Use These 8 Tips to Become a Successful Team Leader
Use These 8 Tips to Become a Successful Team LeaderUse These 8 Tips to Become a Successful Team LeaderA kollektiv leader isnt quite a manager role- most kollektiv leaders dont havehiring and firing power over their kollektiv members- but its not the same as the role of a regular individual contributor either. While companies and departments vary, these common practices can help make you- and your team- successful. They are eight fundamental principles about how a team leader most successfully interacts with their team members. Act With Fairness As a team leader, you often are required to assign tasks or even set the schedule for your team members. You may like some of your team members more than others, that is natural and human. But, that doesnt mean you should show preferences for your favorite team members. If youre having trouble with fairness- and team member complaints are one way to gauge your efforts- ask your manager to look over the task assignments, assign jobs without names, or let a different employee pick their schedule first each week. Lead by Example Team leaders generally work alongside their team members. If youre gossiping or slacking off, your team will lose respect for you. Instead, work hard. Set an example of what you expect from your teammates. Dont talk about team members or others behind their backs. When a team member comes to you with a complaint about a coworker, decide if this is a problem or just whining. If its just whining, shut it down. If its a true problem, solve it. But dont gossip about it. Fix it or dont talk about it. Take On the Unpleasant Tasks You may think that now that youre the team leader, youre finally exempt from doing the tasks you always hated. For instance, if your team is responsible for cleaning the customer restrooms, make sure that youre on the schedule for that, too. While its an unpleasant task, your team members will have more respect for you if they see you taking your turn. Make the Tou gh Decisions While you generally dont have hiring and firing authority, you are responsible for making recommendations to those managers who do. You might be included in job interviews for prospective employees who will potentially join your team. As a team leader sometimes you have to recommend or enforce disciplinary action on a coworker who is also a friend. You may need to recommend suspension or even termination of a team member. Disciplinary actions are difficult, but theyre critical to your teams success. You must handle the problems when they occur. Follow the Law If one of your team members has a baby and takes12 weeks of FMLA-approved leave when she returns you may be tempted to give her the unpleasant tasks- after all, shes been gone for three months. This is, however, against the law. You cant punish someone for taking legally approved leave its called retaliation if you do, and its a growing reason for why employees sue employers. Treat the returning employee like shes been there all along. Likewise, if you have an employee with a disability, work with your manager, the human resources department, and the employee to develop reasonable accommodations as the law requires. Record all overtime. Dont allow your employees to work off the clock, and never ask a coworker to do it. Make sure that you follow all laws and ask your manager or human resources staff member if you have questions. Follow Company Policy Sometimes you may want to grant an exception to company policy, but dont do so without approval from your boss. The reason for company policies may not be immediately clear to you, but its critical that you follow them in order to protect you and the company from accusations of illegal discrimination. For instance, you may think its not a big deal to grant an exception to Jane but not John, but if the exception is not made for the proper reasons, John could claim discrimination. Radiate Happiness at Work This advice might seem silly a nd unnecessary, but your attitude sets an example for the entire group. If youre positive and pleasant, it can make your whole team work harder and better together. Happy employees are more productive, too. Stand Up for Your Team Members Never throw a team member under the bus. If you want to celebrate their successes, you must also stay prepared to support them in their failures. Remember that mistakes happen and you should work to fix them, not simply blame people for them. The Bottom Line Leading a team marks a significant step forward in your career. Make sure you approach the responsibility in the right way. These tips will help you lead people to all of your success.
