Engineers Take Center Stage in NCAA Tournament
Designers Take Center Stage in NCAA Tournament Specialists Take Center Stage in NCAA Tournament Specialists Take Center Stage in NCAA Tournament At Purdue University this March, the weight was on as a significant NCAA b-ball game remained in a precarious situation. With time a factor and the clock ticking, system and cooperation needed to meet up for the success. Be that as it may, the colleagues for this situation were not b-ball players but rather builds. At the point when 7-foot-2-inch beginning focus Isaac Haas broke his elbow in the second round of this years NCAA competition, it was believed that the competition was everything except over for the Boilermakers and its headliner. Nonetheless, a gathering of mechanical building understudies at the college went to work, expecting to make a support that would permit Haas to play in the following game and keep the universitys national title trusts alive. It was realized that Isaac Haas had broken his elbow and I believed that was it [for his season]. It didnt happen to me that he would attempt to play, says Eric Nauman, teacher of mechanical building and biomedical designing at Purdue. At that point, on a Sunday night, overseers sent an email out inquiring as to whether we could make a support for a man as large as that. They put understudies on ready Sunday night and afterward Monday morning the athletic coaches reached us and we were out to perceive what a support could do.Prof. Eric Nauman, Purdue University Prof. Eric Nauman with his group of building understudies who took a shot at an answer for the support. Picture: Purdue University We would wind up being Nauman and his gathering of mechanical designing understudies. We had done a ton of work with assistive gear identified with head wounds and chipping away at protective caps, so we had just taken in a ton about composites and quick prototyping, he says. They put understudies on ready Sunday night and afterward Monday morning the athletic coaches reached us and we were out to perceive what a support could do. Only for You: Read progressively about the most recent in assembling and plan at ASME.org. One basic detour to the undertaking was that the NCAA expected to support the support for Haas, so the group required a fast turnaround time to make something that may pass investigation. Their first plan fizzled. The support that wasnt endorsed was a cutting edge elbow support and it had great metal and composite segments intended to balance out the arm, however there was the idea that it could hurt another player, Nauman says. We expected to think of what something that would settle, forestall lock-out of the elbow, diminish the agony to some degree on the off chance that he fell once more, and have enough cushioning to abstain from harming the elbow further. From their past work, they had protected polymer materials on which they could base their structure, alongside composite work. One colleague was even an understudy who did leatherworking in his extra time and who could make lashes to keep the elbow from locking out. For the support we made [and that was approved], there is where we sewed the calfskin, he says. The calfskin ties descend and are mounted on the bicep and they stretch down to some different lashes that are associated with the lower arm. That holds it together and keeps it from locking out. Our new cushioning material was toward the back over his elbow so on the off chance that he fell it wouldnt hurt about however much through engrossing as much vitality as could be expected. On the sides of the elbow is the place we had these pleasantly tuned compositeswhere they were adaptable side-to-side. Thusly, in the event that somebody ran into them they wouldnt get injured however it was likewise unbending here and there so they would give some steadiness. Making a few models in the short time span, colleagues worked nonstop, some not resting by any means, for an aggregate of 34 hours. We gave [the NCAA] all the parts and gave them three or four unique setups, Nauman says. The group was playing in Boston, where there was a tempest, and the NCAA didnt get the opportunity to take a gander at it until some other time in the week. The decision? A success. They affirmed it, he says. We wanted to meet NCAA standards was a tremendous success for us, empowering Isaac to practice and test in the event that he could go. I love the amazing way the understudies met up. The energy developed as the game moved close. While eventually the decision was that the injury was simply a lot for Haas to play, the support made at any rate made it an opportunities for the groups community. What's more, presently the group is expanding on their work to check whether they can transform it into a gadget that could be utilized for recovery. Everyone would have gotten a kick out of the chance to have seen him in the game, Nauman says. Yet, he put forth a strong effort. Also, those understudies who dealt with the support can feel they put forth a valiant effort, as well. Eric Butterman is an autonomous essayist.

Straight Talk About Trash Talk -
Straight Talk About Trash Talk - Straight Talk About Trash Talk I am a DIE-HARD Seattle sports fan. In baseball, Iâve supported the Seattle Mariners since the 90âs, even through that awful Ichiro trade to the Yankees. Iâm still smarting over my beloved Seahawks stolen Super Bowl against the Steelers. Yet here we are again⦠ready to take on the Broncos. Sweet, sweet redemption. Straight Talk About Trash Talk Except for that Richard Sherman stuff. In case you missed it, the Seahawks star cornerback made the game saving play by tipping an end zone pass resulting in a Seahawks interception. With only seconds left on the clock, Seattle kept the lead and earned their Super Bowl spot. As if that wasnât sweet enough, the pass was intended for Michael Crabtree, a guy that Sherman apparently has some bad history with (check it out here). Within minutes, Sherman is on the sidelines being interviewed by Erin Andrews. Commence the rant heard round the world. With the outcry it caused, surely he dropped an F bomb or two, threatened someoneâs puppy, at the very least he must have called someone a bad name. Wellâ¦. Not exactly. He called his opponent mediocre. Hereâs what went down â" âIâm the best corner in the game! When you try me with a sorry receiver like Crabtree, thatâs the result youâre going to get. Donât you ever talk about me!â When Andrews asked who was talking about him, he replied, âCrabtree. Donât you open your mouth about the best, or Iâll shut it for you real quick. LOB [Legion of Boom]!â A lot of people were dismayed by Shermanâs adrenaline-fueled outburst. Many people complained that he wasnât more like Russell Wilson, our mild-mannered quarterback. He was called âclasslessâ at best and some even called him a âthugâ, possibly referring to his Compton upbringing. Being one of my favorite players from my hometown team, I followed the story closely and was more than a little frustrated with those who donât even follow football passing judgment on less than 30 seconds of the guyâs career. Letâs not forget Sherman is a professional ball player, you know, those guys that are paid millions of dollars to beat each other up over a toy. .ai-rotate {position: relative;} .ai-rotate-hidden {visibility: hidden;} .ai-rotate-hidden-2 {position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;} .ai-list-data, .ai-ip-data, .ai-fallback, .ai-list-block {visibility: hidden; position: absolute; width: 50%; height: 1px; z-index: -9999;} Maybe I donât get it because Iâm a trash talker too. There are SOME daysâ¦. Picture this â" an impossibly skilled candidate is sitting on three offers â" me and two of my biggest competitors. Companies I occasionally lose to. And I hate to lose. So when I WIN? Oh heck yes Iâm jumping up and down in my office. Thank goodness my tirades donât make the national news, because I promise you I drop a few naughty words (sorry mom). Do you know how often that happens? About as often as a guy like Richard Sherman makes a championship winning play against a guy he doesnât like. If you catch me on one of those days, would you think I was a classless recruiter who demeans my profession? Would you make assumptions about the kind of person I am outside of the office by a 30 second tirade? I guess itâs a good thing recruiting is not yet televised. The 5 Qualities of a Toxic Worker
The 5 Qualities of a Toxic Worker Looking at your workforce, does everyone have a positive energy and get along well with each other? Or is there one particular individual who just makes life unnecessarily difficult and creates a negative atmosphere when they are around? If the latter is the case, it sounds like you may have a toxic employee on your hands. If the reason behind the behaviour is that the individual is unhappy in their job, then you may be able to resolve the issues; however if you fail to deal with the toxic worker, it could have negative consequences for the business. Whether they spread office gossip, or are constantly complaining about work, these behaviours can bring the team morale down. Here are a few of the most common qualities of a toxic employee, that you may want to keep an eye out for: 1) Theyre over-confident: A toxic worker tends to over-rate their own abilities and skills and believe they are better at their job than those around them. Their arrogance and know-it-all attitude can make it difficult to work with them in a team and can cause conflict to arise, due to a lack of cooperation. 2) Theyre self-centred: A toxic worker cares more about their own well-being and success than anyone elses and are likely to put them selves first whenever possible. They are unlikely to help others when they need assistance and will only go beyond their role if it is going to benefit them directly. Though this is sometimes an ego thing, sometimes the individual is just entirely oblivious to the impact they have on others. 3) Theyre always complaining: Toxic workers are often negative in the workplace because they are unhappy in their job. For this reason its common for them to complain about work to just about anyone who will listen, whether the issues are to do with their workload, their manager, customers/clients, or something else work related. Theyll often try to get others on board and plant the seed in their minds that there are problems in the workplace and bring the mood down in general. 4) They use unethical methods to get ahead: Toxic workers can play malicious games in order to get ahead. They will often go behind another employees back, or sabotage anothers success in order for personal gain or acknowledgement from management. Some examples of this could be by taking credit for somebody elses work, or flagging up other peoples mistakes, in order to make themselves look better. 5) They are dead-set on following the rules: Abiding by the workplace rules and regulations may sound like a positive quality for an employee to possess, however research has found that the more adamant an individual is that rules should be stuck to at all times, the more likely they are to be fired for breaking the rules. Digitize the Hard Copy â" Ditch the filing cabinet and opt for a scanner and online service which transcribes a document and stores it online. This saves on space and and makes it easily accessible with a few searches rather than digging through folder after folder. Add a Couch or Day Bed â" Long hours in front of the computer can do a number on your back; a small couch or day bed could possibly fit in there so you can take your breaks laying down and relaxing (also great for quick power naps). Add Plants â" Plants are great for decoration, making the place look/feel natural, and for cleaning the stale air in the office. For about $20 $30 you can get a few plants for the office that are easy to maintain and look great. Glass Whiteboards. Ditch the chalkboards and dry erase boards in place of a glass whiteboard. These are great because can be customized in any color (on the back) and theyâre extremely easy to clean even if you use permanent marker! Add Utility to the Desk â" Tired of the power strips tucked behind the desk? Consider screwing them underneath. The same goes for USB extensions and other computer utilities which will make it easier to access. Raise It Up â" Use stands and wall mounts for monitors and speakers for your setup so youâre not stuck staring down at the screen or having your sounds distorted from being in an odd location. This will also give the workspace a clean, sleek look since itâs not all piled on the desk. Hang some Pictures Liven up the area by hanging pictures that inspire you around the office instead of having blank walls. If you canât find something in stores then pick up some photo paper frames and make some of your own. Try Standing Back feeling worn out from sitting all day? Consider switching to a standing desk instead. Standing desks have many health benefits and theyâre quite easy to adjust to after a few days. Add a Partition â" If youâre sharing a home office with someone else (perhaps your spouse?) and need a little privacy then you could opt for a screen partition which can be pulled out and put back during those intense moments at work when it requires your full concentration. Mount a TV Your home office doesnât need to be only about work. Of course you need down time. Consider mounting a TV to the wall and hooking up an HDMI cable from the computer. You now can kick back and watch television during your breaks on the big screen. Go Remote â" Who said you even need to be stuck at the home office all the time in the first place? If youâre in the position where you have one youâre also in the position to move around as you please so take advantage of the flexibility. Install remote desktop software on the main computer and use your laptop to connect to it while youâre sitting on the patio or when youâre off on vacation! Not sure where to start with the home office? Try looking through these inspirational ideas on Pinterest and then start putting together a wish list of items. Once youâre settled on the idea take a weekend to upgrade and modernize the area. Itâll breathe fresh life into the place which will spill over to your work through excitement and change. 4 Easy Employer Branding Updates You MUST Make
4 Easy Employer Branding Updates You MUST Make Talent acquisition strategies and processes have a tendency to outlive their usefulness. This is particularly true in the revived war for talent. Many companies are still operating out of their recession âcrisisâ mode and have not fully realized that itâs time to reinvent themselves to candidates and current employees. Itâs never a good time to rip the Band-aid off and change, especially if what you are doing still seems to be working. But the danger with this tendency is that the longer you wait the further behind you fall. In the meantime, your competitors get ahead. What can you do to update your employment brand? How can you demonstrate why your company is the best place to work today? Here are four easy, often overlooked updates that can create a big impact in a short amount of time they also require minimal buy-in and so are easier wins: 1) Update your career website: This is the first impression you make. It needs to be up-to-date aesthetically, functionally, and in content. Todayâs candidates have short attention spans and demand easy access â" when they donât get it, they click on the next search result. Your site needs to engage viewers within the first three seconds to keep them from clicking off the page. You need to look like a 21st century employer, speak to candidates as real human beings, demonstrate that you care about their success, and build a case for why they should choose you as the best place to invest their careers. Action steps: Feature real employees in videos to demonstrate your culture. Talk about career paths and trajectories â" what their career could look like down the road. Create job-specific microsites to address specific candidate populations. Make it insanely easy to join your talent community and stress a clear value proposition for what they will get in return â" job postings, career insights, invitations to company recruiting events, etc. 2) Consistently leverage social media: Go where your ideal candidates are in the social world. Find the niche sites, blogs, discussions, and forums that they participate in and engage as an active voice in those communities. You cannot afford to have a reactive mindset. You must go out and connect with candidates who are not actively looking at you as a prospective employer. People are open to being actively recruited where they live and play, and they value employers who maintain a current, active presence in the online conversations that matter to them. Action steps: Dedicate resources to maintain a steady presence on social media. Create a well-thought out content strategy to regularly post content that offers value to your audience. Be personable, respectful, and honest. Candidates know that every company has pros and cons â" if you are not open to discussing the challenges they can read about on company review sites like Glassdoor.com, they will not take you seriously. 3) Update your hiring programs: Most companies have intern programs, diversity initiatives, veteran hiring programs, and other specialized initiatives unfortunately, these are often neglected and outdated. With careful examination, you can revamp and revive them to appeal to the current generation of candidates who are seeking these programs. Student employees are the future bench of your company, but most students have a tough time âbreaking inâ to jobs that provide the experience they need to build their careers. If you can make âbreaking inâ incredibly easy and appealing at your company, you will quickly become the employer of choice for young talent. Likewise, veterans are an under-tapped pool of talent â" most need help remapping their military training to civilian skillsets. If you can make this process easy, clear, and provide the orientation/mentoring needed to adjust to a civilian workforce, you can draw on a strong pool of dedicated talent. Action steps: Look at your current programs. How are they outdated? What changes would make them appealing? If you donât know, seek guidance from external resources. Brand your company as the âemployer of choiceâ for the specific talent demographic that you are targeting by creating an easy process that supports them. Actively engage in the communities these candidates frequent. Build trust by having current employees from these talent pools interact with potential hires. 4) Automate and simplify: Even with todayâs technologies, many companies cling to outdated processes because change is costly and perceived as too disruptive. Purposefully look for areas where your processes can be automated and simplified. This saves you time and money, and also helps your company build its âWeâre a 21st Century Employerâ brand by utilizing current technologies. Action steps: Ask employees for their input. What would make their work easier? What currently takes too much time? Are you using old school spreadsheets? What could be moved online? Where can you cut out steps without impacting the integrity of the process? What small changes would improve the hiring experience for candidates and hiring managers? It may seem daunting at first, but taking the time today to update your TA strategies and processes will help you stay at the forefront on the war on talent. With competition as it is, you canât afford to be left behind. How to Write a Strong Resume
How to Write a Strong ResumeSometimes, I have a difficulty writing a strong resume. It's not that I have a difficulty writing coherent sentences; I just struggle to determine what the main point of the paragraph is, and therefore don't know what to keep and what to take out. Instead of writing a strong resume I always have to guess which sections are most important and want to keep, and which sections are simply unnecessary and need to be taken out. This creates a great deal of wasted paper and a poor impression of my skills and experience.Of course, sometimes I also need to cut down on my vocabulary. After all, writing a strong resume is very different from writing an article - if I can't explain a concept in my own words then how will the reader understand it? Or how can I be understood by the employer? In order to create an effective resume that conveys exactly what I'm looking for the writer needs to know how to use words to their advantage.Fortunately, once you've learnt how to learn the basics of how to write a strong resume you should be able to do it with any job and get a good interview. The only thing you really need to remember is to try and tailor the content to the job you're applying for. As a sales representative for a car dealer for example, you would use words like 'training courses', 'supervisors 'students' to describe the job you're applying for rather than the words like 'training sessions 'therapy sessions'.Now that you understand the basics of how to write a strong resume, the next step is to develop your own style of writing. Writing a resume is something that all job applicants have to do - whether they've been working in sales for five years or if they're applying for a clerical position. However, the resume needs to look different from other resumes, so you need to think about how to make it stand out from the crowd. While some people put in regular, wordy words, others like to use abbreviations, acronyms and symbols. So think about how you can make your resume stand out. Also, when creating a strong resume you may find that you are forced to use words that have special meanings to you - words like 'dealt'completed' are good examples. When you want to make your resume look different to other applicants who aren't familiar with the industry or have no connection to it, use the special words and phrases in a way that you wouldn't normally use them. For example, a strong resume can be made up of the word 'experience' if you've had a lot of it, 'supervisor' if you're the supervisor of a lot of workers, or 'involving' if you're involving a lot of people and that's how the company works. The point is to make your resume unique, because it's only going to help you get a better job if you can demonstrate your strengths and weaknesses in an effective way. Finally, always be polite when presenting your strong resume to an employer, especially when they ask you to summarize it for them. They want to know that you are impressive and understand the importance of your skills and experience.

Objectives on Resumes
Objectives on Resumes I see/hear lots of people debating about objectives versus career summaries on resumes. For those of you who dont know the difference, here is a quick explanation. Starting back in the stone ages, when a person created their resume (typed, written by hand, chiseled with a sharp stone and slate, etc.) they would typically start the resume with an objective statement like this: Objective- to obtain a challenging position where I can utilize my skills with a company that provides opportunity for growth. Or something similar. What exactly is this telling the employer? What can you do for me? How much will you pay me? Its important to remember the main thing when creating your resume it is not what the company can do for you, its what you can do for the company! Frankly, when a hiring person is going through a stack of resumes, they really arent caring what your goals in life are, or how you would like the company to open up opportunities for you. You have to prove to them that you are there to HELP THEM. Remember, its not about you. It is the first thing the reader will see, and I guarantee that you will NOT leave a lasting impression. Your resume will most likely end up in the circular file. An objective statement by itself doesnt do that. A career summary explains what it is that you can do for the company, what your expertise is in, your brand, your strengths. All of these things tell the employer that you can DO THIS FOR THEM. If the career summary is followed by bulleted keywords, keyword action phrases, core competencies, etc., even better. The first half of the page is the area that gets looked at and decided upon instantly. Better to pack a punch. Here is an example of an effective career summary: Dynamic executive leadership career in international, billion dollar organizations with a rich mix of finance, operations, internal/external processes, technical savvy and business development. Intimate knowledge of financial processes, operating results and profitability. Expert in executing team-driven process improvements to increase revenue growth operational efficiency, and overall profitability. Executive MBA. Expertise in: *Financial Procurement Controls *International Sourcing, Operations Finance *Contract Negotiations Procurement Controls *Technology Process Implementation *Strategic Financial Planning *Start Ups, Turnaround Revitalization Much better, more impactful, dont you think? Now, I have seen (and written) some resumes where it says something like, Objective-Executive Finance Position that was followed by a career summary. In that case, it was/is more like an introduction to the person, their brand, and the position they want. Go over your resume thoroughly and remove/rewrite your objective so that it is speaking to the employer telling them what you can do for them. Replace it with a fresh and dynamic career summary. You need to sell yourself on your resume and a one liner objective isnt going to do it.

Cover Letters Do Matter
Cover Letters Do MatterAndrew Lamberson doesnt work for The New York Times Magazine in Brooklyn. And his titelbild letter didnt get him a job. So whats the point here?Well, Andrew always believed that titelblatt letters were essentially uselessand so he wrote boring cover letter after boring cover letter for jobs that he didnt getand wasnt all that interested in anyway. Then he saw a posting on Facebook for NYTM, a publication that he loved and read religiously. He decided to get a little crazynothing ventured, nothing gained, right? He really wanted the job, and he had to find a way to convince the head photo editor, Kathy Ryan, that he was exactly the right person for their photo division.Lamberson chose a photo that really spoke to himan image that photographer Eugene Richards took of Joan Didion. He sent Ryan a letter telling her how the image had affected him, and how Didions personality really came through in the photo. He talked about how the photo had turned on its edge everyt hing hed learned about photography in college and had given him an entirely new perspective. Then he expressed his desire to contributeand his belief that he could.Lamberson worked hard on his cover letterand even had a copy editor look it over. He didnt worry overly much about his resume, counting on the cover letter to do the work for him. Then, something amazing happened Within just an hour of receiving Lambersons letter and resume, Ryan responded she invited him to come in for an interview. If youre expecting a totally happy ending, you wont see that here. Lamberson didnt get the job because, in the final analysis, he didnt have enough magazine experience. His cover letter got him an interview, not a job. But heres the thinghe did get the interview. And when he does have enough experience, you can bet that Ryan will remember him.Ryan told Lamberson that out of all the applicants for the position (and there were a great many), his cover letter was the best, and she asked him to ke ep in touch. So, what have we learned from this? Cover letters matter even if you dont immediately get the job. Properly done, they DO get you noticed. The job might not happen today, but a stellar cover letter can get you noticed and get you on file. Never give up on your dreams. Dream big. Your dreams might not be realized immediately, but down the road, who knows what could happen? Never assume that a job is out of reach. Give it your best shot, and the job that you dont get today could very well be yours tomorrow.
